Tolland County sees extended winter outages, not just short interruptions. When the power goes out, well pumps, sump pumps, and heating systems can all stop. Extension cords and portable generators are temporary fixes at best — and can create serious safety risks if used incorrectly. A standby generator solves the problem, but only if it’s installed and wired properly.
We Install Generators the Right Way From Start to Finish
We begin with a load calculation to make sure your generator is properly sized before you buy anything. From there, we install the transfer switch, run the necessary circuits, handle permits, and coordinate with gas or LP providers so everything is done in the correct order and up to code.

Here is exactly what Rosa Electric handles when you book a generator installation or maintenance visit.
Before any equipment gets purchased, we calculate the electrical load for the circuits you want backed up — essential loads, whole-home loads, or somewhere in between — so the generator you buy is actually sized to do the job.
We install the transfer switch — manual or automatic depending on your setup — wired correctly so your generator circuits are fully isolated from the utility line, which protects utility workers and meets Connecticut electrical code.
We run the dedicated circuit from your panel to the generator connection point, sized for the generator's output and installed in conduit where required, including weatherproof fittings for the exterior connection.
We coordinate the sequencing of the gas line or LP tank connection with your fuel contractor so the electrical work and the fuel hookup happen in the right order — we do not do gas work ourselves, but we make sure the two sides of the job don't end up waiting on each other.
We pull the electrical permit with your municipality and coordinate the inspection — the permit fee is included in your estimate upfront, and the inspection is part of the job, not something we hand off to you to figure out.
We service existing generators — oil and filter changes, spark plug checks, load bank testing, battery condition, and transfer switch operation — to make sure the unit starts and runs under load when you actually need it, not just when you hit the test button.
A generator that starts on test day but fails during an actual outage is worse than useless — here is what separates a proper installation from one that creates problems.
Transfer Switch Isolation Is Non-Negotiable
Without a proper transfer switch, a generator can backfeed power onto utility lines, creating a serious hazard for lineworkers and exposing you to liability.
Sizing Determines Whether It Works
An undersized generator will trip when key systems turn on — proper load calculation ensures it can handle what you actually need during an outage.
Permitted Work Protects You
Unpermitted installations can void insurance coverage, cause issues during a home sale, and leave you paying to bring everything up to code later.
Maintenance Keeps It Ready
Standby generators sit unused for long periods — without regular maintenance, they may not start or run properly when the power goes out.

Generator installation is one of the primary category services Rosa Electric offers — you can see everything we handle on our homepage.
If your panel is already at capacity, adding a generator transfer switch and dedicated circuit may require a service upgrade first — we evaluate both together so you get one complete quote.
A lot of homeowners adding a standby generator are thinking about long-term energy resilience at the same time they're looking at home EV charging — we install both and can plan the electrical work together.
If your existing generator isn't starting, isn't running clean under load, or the transfer switch isn't operating correctly, that's a troubleshooting job — we diagnose and repair generator electrical issues the same way we handle any other electrical problem.
Commercial standby generator installations for offices, restaurants, and retail properties involve larger transfer switches, higher-amperage circuits, and code requirements that go beyond a residential install — we handle those too.

As a family-run business, our reputation means everything to us. We show up when we say we will, complete the work properly and safely, and leave your home clean and secure when the job is done—here’s what local homeowners have said about working with us.

That depends on what you want to power, and it's the first question we work through before you buy anything. There's a big difference between a generator sized for essential loads — well pump, sump pump, refrigerator, a few lights, and your furnace — and one sized to run the whole house including the central AC. Most homes in Tolland County land somewhere in the 11kW to 20kW range for a whole-home standby unit, but we do a real load calculation based on your actual circuits before we give you a number. Buying the wrong size generator is an expensive mistake. We'd rather help you get it right the first time
We handle the electrical side — transfer switch, dedicated circuit, permit, inspection. The gas line connection to a natural gas or LP-fueled standby generator has to be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter. What we do is coordinate with your gas contractor so both sides of the job are sequenced correctly and neither trade is sitting around waiting on the other. If you don't already have a gas contractor lined up, we can point you toward people we've worked with in the area. The goal is one smooth installation, not two contractors working past each other.
Most manufacturers recommend annual service for standby generators, and we'd agree with that as a baseline — more often if the unit runs a lot during outages. A maintenance visit covers the oil and filter change, spark plug inspection, air filter check, battery condition, coolant level if applicable, and a transfer switch function test. We also run the unit under load to make sure it's actually performing the way it should, not just idling. A generator that only gets tested at idle once a week can still fail to carry the load when the power goes out. Call Tracy at 860-872-2366 to get a maintenance visit on the calendar before storm season.
Yes, an electrical permit is required for generator installations in Connecticut — the transfer switch wiring and the generator circuit are permit-required electrical work, and the installation has to be inspected. Rosa Electric is licensed under Connecticut License #E1-0184929 and we pull the permit as part of every generator installation we do — the fee is included in your estimate, not added later. If you bought a house and the generator was installed without a permit, that's a retroactive permit situation. It's fixable, but it involves an inspection of the existing work and potentially corrections if something isn't up to code. We can walk you through what that process looks like if you're dealing with it. Either way, having it permitted and on record is what protects you with your insurance carrier and at your next home sale.
